Short answer: on an iPhone or Mac, Apple Mail is the better app for most people: it's built in, has no ads, puts all your accounts in one inbox and includes Apple Intelligence on recent devices. The Gmail app is better if you live in Gmail and want its tabs, search and Gemini features, or use Android too. As email services, Gmail gives you more free storage (15 GB against iCloud's 5 GB) and works everywhere, while iCloud Mail has no ads and cheaper custom domains.

One thing to clear up first: Apple Mail is an app, while Gmail is both an email service and an app. You can use your Gmail account inside Apple Mail, so the real questions are which app to use, and whether iCloud Mail or Gmail should be your main address. We cover both.

Part 1: the Apple Mail app vs the Gmail app
Features
Apple Mail works with almost any account: iCloud, Gmail, Exchange, Yahoo and IMAP set themselves up, and your mail lands in one All Inboxes view. It sorts mail into four categories, lets you undo a send (10 seconds by default, adjustable), schedule mail, get follow-up reminders, and, with iCloud+, use Hide My Email. On a Mac you also get rules and Smart Mailboxes. When you add Gmail, Google says your messages and labels sync, and labels show up as mailboxes.
The Gmail app is built around Gmail: five inbox tabs, snooze, schedule send (up to 100 scheduled emails), confidential mode, Smart Compose and Google's search. On iPhone and iPad it can also add Outlook, iCloud, Yahoo and IMAP addresses, up to five, with an All inboxes view. There's no Gmail app for Mac; on a computer you use gmail.com in a browser, or add Gmail to Apple Mail.
Verdict: Apple Mail, for handling several accounts on iPhone and Mac. The Gmail app if Gmail is your only account and you want its tabs and search.
User experience
Apple Mail looks and works like the rest of your Apple apps and is the same on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Gmail looks the same on iPhone, Android and the web, which helps if you switch between an iPhone and a Windows or Android device. On a Mac, Gmail means a browser tab, while Apple Mail is a full desktop app.
Verdict: Apple Mail on Apple devices; Gmail if you also use Windows or Android.
AI
Apple Mail's AI is Apple Intelligence: Writing Tools write, rewrite and proofread, Smart Reply drafts answers, a summary appears under each unread email, and Priority Messages puts urgent mail at the top. It's free, but needs an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16 or later, or an iPad or Mac with M1 or later.
Gmail's AI is Gemini. Personal accounts in the US get Help me write and suggested replies free, and AI Overviews summarize long threads. Google AI Plus ($4.99 a month) adds more, like the AI Inbox, Pro ($19.99 a month) adds AI search, and Workspace plans include Gemini from Business Starter. Outside the US, Help me write needs a paid plan.
Verdict: Apple Mail if your device supports Apple Intelligence; Gmail if you're in the US or pay for a Google AI plan.
Privacy
Apple Mail has no ads. Mail Privacy Protection hides your IP address and stops senders seeing when you open a message, and Mail supports S/MIME encryption. Google says it doesn't scan or read your Gmail to show you ads, and hasn't since 2017, but personal Gmail accounts do see ads in the Promotions and Social tabs, and Gmail processes your mail for features like categories, Smart Compose and spam filtering. Confidential mode can set an expiry date and block forwarding, but it isn't encryption.
Verdict: Apple Mail, for no ads and Mail Privacy Protection.
Price
Both apps are free. Gmail's extra AI comes with Google AI plans from $4.99 a month, and Gmail on your own domain needs Google Workspace, from $7 per user a month on an annual plan.

Storage: Gmail starts with three times the free space, which matters if you keep years of mail and photos. iCloud+ is cheaper for small upgrades ($0.99 a month for 50 GB).
Your own domain: iCloud+ lets you use up to five custom domains with up to 10 addresses each, at no extra cost. With Gmail, a custom domain means paying for Google Workspace.
Encryption: neither service encrypts your mail end to end. Apple says iCloud Mail is encrypted in transit and on its servers but isn't end-to-end, even with Advanced Data Protection, because email has to work with every other provider. Personal Gmail uses TLS in transit. For end-to-end encryption, you'd use S/MIME or PGP.
Using it everywhere: Gmail works on any device. iCloud Mail is built into Apple devices; elsewhere you use icloud.com in a browser or add it to another app over IMAP with an app-specific password (it doesn't support POP). Note that Google can delete personal accounts that haven't been used for two years.
Verdict: Gmail for free storage and using it anywhere; iCloud Mail for no ads and a cheap custom domain.
Apple Mail vs Gmail: final verdict
If you use an iPhone or Mac, Apple Mail is the better everyday app, and it handles your Gmail account well. Pick the Gmail app if Gmail is your only account and you want its tabs, search and Gemini, or if you also use Android. For the address itself, choose Gmail for free storage and access everywhere, or iCloud Mail for no ads and a custom domain included with iCloud+.
