Short answer: pick Mimestream if every account you have is Gmail or Google Workspace and you only need email on a Mac: it handles Gmail's labels, categories and filters better than any general email app. Pick Canary Mail if you also use Outlook, iCloud, Yahoo or Exchange, want the same app on iPhone, Windows or Android, or want AI and PGP encryption. Canary has a free plan; Mimestream costs $49.99 a year after a 14-day trial.

Gmail experience
Mimestream is built only for Gmail and connects through the Gmail API. Labels keep their colors, Gmail's own Primary, Promotions and Social categories show up as they do on the web, you can edit the server-side filters that sort your mail on every device, and search runs on Gmail's servers. Aliases, vacation replies and calendar invitations are handled in the app too.
Canary works with Gmail accounts as one provider among several, with a unified inbox, snooze, templates, one-tap unsubscribe and AI sorting that runs on your device.
Verdict: Mimestream. If Gmail's way of organizing mail is what you care about most, it's the more faithful app.
Accounts and platforms
This is where the two part ways. Mimestream only takes Gmail and Google Workspace accounts and only runs on the Mac; an iPhone and iPad version has been in TestFlight beta since July 2026 for customers who qualify, with no App Store date. Canary takes Gmail, Outlook and Microsoft 365, Exchange, iCloud, Yahoo and any IMAP account, and runs on Mac, iPhone, iPad, Windows and Android, so the same inbox follows you between a Mac at home and a Windows PC at work.
Verdict: Canary Mail, unless you're Gmail-only and Mac-only.
AI features
Mimestream has no AI model of its own. It supports Apple's Writing Tools, so on an Apple silicon Mac you can rewrite and proofread with Apple Intelligence, and it has handy non-AI tools like templates with variables and Send and Archive.
Canary sorts incoming mail with AI on every plan, including the free one. Growth ($36 a year) adds AI that drafts replies, rewrites and summarizes long threads. Triage runs on your device, and Canary doesn't use your email to train AI.
Verdict: Canary Mail.
Privacy and security
Both take privacy seriously. Mimestream keeps your mail and sign-in tokens on your Mac, connects to Gmail directly, blocks trackers from more than 75 services and has passed Google's CASA security assessment. Canary blocks tracking pixels by default and keeps triage on your device. The difference is encryption: Canary's Pro+ plan ($100 a year) adds PGP, SecureSend for encrypted mail to people who don't use PGP, and phishing and impersonation detection. Verdict: Canary Mail if you need encryption; otherwise close.
Price
Canary's free plan covers unlimited accounts on two devices with AI sorting and basic read receipts. Growth is $36 a year (or $100 once) and Pro+ is $100 a year (or $300 once), each with a 7-day trial; there's no monthly plan. Mimestream has a 14-day trial, then costs $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year for all your Google accounts on up to five devices, shared with your immediate family if you like. It has no free plan and no lifetime license.
Verdict: Canary Mail for one person: it's free to start and Growth costs less than Mimestream. Mimestream if you prefer to pay monthly or share with family.
