Short answer: pick Edison Mail if you want a completely free app that tracks packages, trips and bills for you. Pick Canary Mail if you want PGP encryption, AI that writes and summarizes, a Windows app, or an app whose business doesn't depend on research data from your inbox. Both have unified inboxes, one-tap unsubscribe and tracker blocking.

Inbox and organization
Edison's strongest feature is its Assistant: smart folders that collect travel plans, package tracking, bills, receipts and subscriptions without moving your mail, plus a Focused Inbox, custom swipes, undo send, snooze and pinned messages. It's all free.
Canary sorts incoming mail with AI on every plan and has a unified inbox, snooze, pin, templates and one-tap unsubscribe. Send later and full read receipts are on Growth. Canary also has a calendar on Mac, iPhone and iPad (Gmail only on Windows, not on Android).
Verdict: Edison, for free automatic tracking of orders and trips. Canary, if you want AI sorting and read receipts.
AI features
Edison's AI Compose, built on Meta's Llama 3 model, writes and rewrites emails, changes tone and length and checks grammar when you tap its icon. It's on mobile.
Canary's AI drafts replies, rewrites, summarizes long threads and sorts your inbox. Sorting is free; writing and summaries need Growth ($36 a year). Canary doesn't use your email to train AI.
Verdict: Canary, for summaries and AI on the desktop as well as the phone.
Privacy and security
Both block tracking pixels by default. The difference is the business model. Edison is owned by research firm YipitData and is free because of it: Edison collects information from commercial emails such as receipts, strips out personal details, and uses it for aggregated e-commerce research. It says it never shares your emails or personal information, doesn't target ads, and lets you opt out or delete your data. Edison Mail+ adds phishing warnings.
Canary is paid for by its subscriptions. Triage runs on your device, and the Pro+ plan adds PGP encryption, SecureSend for encrypted messages to people without PGP, and phishing and impersonation detection. See our guide to PGP encryption.

Platforms and accounts
Both work with Gmail, Outlook and Microsoft 365, Exchange, iCloud, Yahoo and IMAP accounts. Canary runs on Windows as well as Mac, iPhone, iPad and Android. Edison announced a Windows app in 2024, but its site now lists Mac, iPhone, iPad and Android only.
Verdict: Canary, if you use Windows. Otherwise a tie.

Edison is free, and most people never need Edison Mail+, which costs $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year. Canary's free plan covers unlimited accounts on 2 devices; Growth is $36 a year and Pro+ $100 a year, or $100 and $300 as lifetime licenses, with a 7-day trial and no monthly option.
Verdict: Edison, if you don't want to pay anything. Among the paid tiers, Canary is far cheaper.
