Ymail vs Gmail: Which Email Service Is Better in 2026?

Short answer: Ymail is Yahoo Mail. An @ymail.com address is just another Yahoo Mail domain, so "Ymail vs Gmail" is really Yahoo Mail vs Gmail. Gmail is the better choice for most people: more people use it, its spam filter and security are stronger, it doesn't read your email for ads, and its free AI features go further. Yahoo Mail now gives you more free storage (20 GB against Gmail's 15 GB shared with Drive and Photos) and handles other accounts better on the web, but it shows more ads and deletes mailboxes you don't open for a year.

What is Ymail?

Ymail isn't a separate email service. Yahoo added @ymail.com (and @rocketmail.com) as extra address domains in 2008, so people could get a name that was already taken on @yahoo.com. An @ymail.com address uses the same Yahoo account, the same inbox at mail.yahoo.com and the same Yahoo Mail app as any @yahoo.com address.

  • Can you still get one? No. Yahoo's help pages say new accounts can choose @yahoo.com or the newer @myyahoo.com, and the sign-up form offers only those two.
  • Do old @ymail.com addresses still work? Yes, as long as the account stays active. They're ordinary Yahoo accounts, so Yahoo's rules apply: you sign in at login.yahoo.com, and an unused account is eventually deleted (more on that below).
  • Is it legitimate? Yes. An @ymail.com address is a real Yahoo address, not a lookalike or a scam domain.

So for the rest of this comparison, "Ymail" and "Yahoo Mail" mean the same thing.

Storage and attachments

This is where most older comparisons are wrong. Yahoo Mail used to give everyone 1 TB of free storage, but in 2025 it cut free accounts to 20 GB. More space costs $1.99 a month for 100 GB or $9.99 a month for 1 TB, and both still show ads. Yahoo Mail Plus ($5 a month) gives you 200 GB without ads. If a Yahoo mailbox fills up, Yahoo says you can't send or receive until you clear space, and mail sent to you in the meantime is lost.

Gmail's free 15 GB is shared with Google Drive and Google Photos, so photos backed up from your phone eat into your email space. Google's AI Plus plan ($4.99 a month) raises that to 400 GB and adds more Gemini features.

Attachments are now a tie: both cap a message at 25 MB. Gmail turns anything bigger into a Google Drive link automatically.

Verdict: Yahoo Mail, narrowly, if you only care about email storage. Gmail if you also use Drive or Photos, since one upgrade covers everything.

Features and AI

Gmail sorts mail into Primary, Social, Promotions, Updates and Forums, and has strong search, snooze, scheduled sending and confidential mode. Its free Gemini features for personal accounts are Help me write (US only), summaries of long threads and suggested replies. Proofreading and asking questions about your inbox need Google AI Pro ($19.99 a month).

Yahoo Mail has caught up more than its reputation suggests. The app summarizes emails (flights, bills, verification codes), drafts messages with AI Compose in five tones, and offers one-tap unsubscribe and delete-by-sender. In March 2026 Yahoo added Planner, which pulls tasks and events out of your inbox, for US users of the app. Yahoo also shows deal summaries from retailers at the top of messages unless you pay for Mail Plus.

Verdict: Gmail. Both now have useful free AI, but Gmail's search, organization and Google integration are still ahead.

Security and privacy

Both services support two-step verification, security keys and passkeys, and both encrypt mail in transit with TLS. Neither offers end-to-end encryption on a personal account; Gmail's S/MIME is only for work and school accounts.

The differences are in track record and data use:

  • Breaches: Yahoo has said that every account that existed in August 2013 was likely affected by that year's theft.
  • Spam: Google says Gmail blocks 99.9% of spam, malware and dangerous links; Yahoo says it blocks 99% of spam.
  • Ads and your email: Google stopped scanning Gmail content for ad personalization in 2017. Yahoo's privacy policy says it analyzes commercial emails, such as receipts and newsletters from companies, to build ad profiles. You can opt out in Yahoo's privacy settings.

Verdict: Gmail, on both spam filtering and privacy from ads. If you want end-to-end encryption, neither is the answer; see the best secure email apps.

Ads, paid plans and custom domains

Free Yahoo Mail shows ads in the inbox, and buying extra storage doesn't remove them. Only Yahoo Mail Plus ($5 a month) is ad-free; it also adds 200 GB, disposable addresses, auto-forwarding and protection from inactivity deletion. In December 2025 Yahoo ended its other subscriptions, so the old Yahoo Mail Pro no longer exists.

Gmail shows ads only in the Promotions and Social tabs. Paying for Google AI Plus or Pro gets you storage and Gemini, not an ad-free inbox; for that you need Google Workspace (from $7 per user per month), which also gives you an address on your own domain. We couldn't find a current Yahoo product for custom-domain email.

Verdict: Yahoo Mail Plus is the cheaper way to get rid of ads. Gmail, through Google Workspace, if you want your own domain.

Apps and using other accounts

Both have free apps for iPhone and Android and a web version; neither has a Mac or Windows app (Yahoo discontinued the Windows app it once had).

Yahoo Mail is more flexible with other accounts: it can add Gmail, Outlook and AOL addresses for free, on the web and in the app. Gmail on the web no longer lets you add a third-party account, and Gmailify, POP fetching and sending as a non-Gmail address end in January 2027. The Gmail apps for iPhone and Android can still add Yahoo and other IMAP accounts.

Verdict: Yahoo Mail, if you want one web inbox for several accounts. Otherwise a tie.

Should you switch from Yahoo Mail to Gmail?

If Yahoo's ads, the 2025 storage cut or the 2013 breach bother you, switching is reasonable, and it doesn't cost anything. A few things to know before you do:

  • Bring your old mail: Gmail's Import mail and contacts tool (Settings, See all settings, Accounts and import) can copy your Yahoo mail and contacts. Google hasn't said whether it will keep working after its January 2027 changes, so do it sooner rather than later.
  • Keep receiving Yahoo mail: automatic forwarding from Yahoo needs Mail Plus. On a free account, add your Yahoo address to the Gmail app on your phone, or to an email app that handles both.
  • Don't let the Yahoo account lapse by accident: Yahoo empties a mailbox you haven't opened for 12 months and schedules the account for deletion after 18 months without signing in. If people still write to your @ymail.com or @yahoo.com address, sign in now and then.

Ymail vs Gmail: final verdict

Choose Gmail if you want the stronger security record, better search and organization, no ad scanning of your email, and an account that works with everything else from Google. That's most people.

Keep Yahoo Mail (Ymail) if you've had your address for years and people know it, you want slightly more free email storage, or you like checking Gmail and Outlook accounts from one web inbox. Consider Mail Plus if the ads get to you.

Using Yahoo Mail and Gmail together
