Canary Mail vs Outlook (2026): AI, Privacy, Calendar and Price

Disclosure: we make Canary Mail. We've tried to compare it with Outlook the way we'd compare two apps we don't make, and we say plainly where Outlook is the better pick. Prices and features were checked on microsoft.com, Microsoft Support and canarymail.io on October 16, 2026.

Short answer: stay with Outlook if your work runs on Microsoft 365: shared calendars, Teams meetings and company mailboxes are where it's strongest, and the basic app is free. Pick Canary Mail if you mostly manage personal or mixed accounts (Gmail, iCloud, Yahoo and Outlook together) and want AI writing for $36 a year instead of $99.99, no ads, tracker blocking and PGP encryption. Both run on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android; only Outlook has a web version.

Inbox and everyday email

Outlook's Focused Inbox splits mail into Focused and Other, and you can teach it by moving senders between the two. Rules, a unified inbox and blocking are all there. A few things you might expect are paid extras on some platforms: on the Mac, for example, Microsoft lists send later and read receipts as needing Microsoft 365.

Canary sorts incoming mail with AI on every plan, free included, and keeps all your accounts in one inbox with snooze, pinning, templates and one-click unsubscribe. Read receipts and send later come with Growth. The free plan has a basic version of read receipts too.

Verdict: Close. Outlook if you like rules and the Focused/Other split; Canary if you want AI sorting and no ads at no cost.

AI features

Copilot in Outlook drafts and rewrites emails and summarizes threads. For personal accounts it comes with Microsoft 365 Personal ($99.99 a year), Family or Premium, not with the free app or Microsoft 365 Basic. Work accounts need a business licence with Copilot.

Canary's AI drafts replies, rewrites, summarizes long threads and lets you search in plain English. Writing and summaries are on Growth ($36 a year). Inbox triage runs on your device, and Canary doesn't use your email to train AI.

Verdict: Canary is the cheaper way to get AI in your inbox. Outlook's Copilot makes more sense if you already pay for Microsoft 365 for Word and Excel.

Privacy and security

The free version of Outlook shows ads; Microsoft 365 Basic ($19.99 a year) removes them. Outlook supports S/MIME, and Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers can mark Outlook.com messages Encrypt or Do Not Forward. Those messages stay inside Microsoft 365, and people on other email services open them through a Microsoft portal with a one-time passcode. There's no PGP. If you add Gmail, iCloud or Yahoo accounts to Outlook for Mac, iPhone or Android, Microsoft can sync a copy of that mail through its own cloud, which features like Focused Inbox rely on.

Canary blocks tracking pixels by default and connects to your accounts directly. Pro+ ($100 a year) adds PGP encryption, SecureSend for encrypted messages to people who don't use PGP, and phishing and impersonation detection. Our guide to PGP encryption explains how it works.

Verdict: Canary, if you want no ads, tracker blocking and PGP. Outlook's encryption works best when everyone is on Microsoft 365.

Calendar, Teams and Microsoft 365

This is Outlook's home ground. Its calendar handles shared work calendars and one-click Teams meetings, alongside contacts and the rest of Microsoft 365. If your company runs on Microsoft 365, Outlook is what IT supports and what your colleagues use.

Canary has a full calendar on Mac, iPhone and iPad. On Windows it works with Gmail calendars, and there's no calendar on Android yet. Canary Mail is built for individuals; for team inboxes, the same company makes Shared Inbox by Canary, from $10 per user a month with a 14-day trial.

Verdict: Outlook, clearly, for work calendars and anything tied to Microsoft 365.

Apps and platforms

Both have apps for Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad and Android, and both handle Gmail, iCloud, Yahoo and IMAP alongside Microsoft accounts; Canary also connects to Exchange and Microsoft 365. Outlook adds a web version you can open from any browser, which Canary doesn't have. On Windows, the new Outlook comes with Windows for free and replaced the old Mail and Calendar apps. Price

If you only want an ad-free mailbox, Microsoft 365 Basic at $19.99 a year is cheap. If you want AI help with email, Canary Growth costs $36 a year against $99.99 for Microsoft 365 Personal, although Personal also gets you Word, Excel and 1 TB of storage. Canary has no monthly option.

Verdict: Canary for AI on a budget; Outlook if Microsoft 365 is worth it to you anyway.

Which should you choose?

• Choose Outlook if you work in Microsoft 365, rely on shared calendars and Teams, need a web version, or already pay for Microsoft 365.
• Choose Canary Mail if you juggle Gmail, iCloud, Yahoo and Outlook accounts, want AI writing without a $100 subscription, dislike ads, or need PGP encryption.

Does Outlook have end-to-end encryption?

Does Canary Mail have a calendar like Outlook?
