Mac Mail Not Opening or Not Working? Fixes for 2026

Short answer: If Mail won't open or freezes on your Mac, force quit it (Option-Command-Esc), restart the Mac and install any macOS update. If it still won't open, start up in safe mode to rule out other software, take a slow account offline, and rebuild the mailbox that hangs. As a last resort, Mail can rebuild its message index from scratch. If Mail opens but something else is wrong, such as sending, receiving or search, use the table below to jump to the right fix.

The steps are for macOS 27 and also work on macOS Tahoe 26, Sequoia 15 and Sonoma 14.

If Mail won't open

1. Force quit Mail and try again

Mail may still be running in the background even if no window shows. Press Option-Command-Esc (or choose Apple menu > Force Quit), select Mail and click Force Quit. Then open Mail from the Applications folder.

2. Restart your Mac and update macOS

A restart clears stuck background processes. Then check System Settings > General > Software Update: Mail is part of macOS, so fixes for it arrive as macOS updates. Mail problems often appear right after a big update and are fixed in the next point release.

3. Check free disk space

Mail needs room to update its database. If your startup disk is nearly full, Mail can hang at launch. Check System Settings > General > Storage and free some space.

4. Start up in safe mode

Safe mode loads macOS without third-party startup items and extensions, which shows whether other software is the problem.

Mac with Apple silicon: shut down. Press and hold the power button until "Loading startup options" appears, select your startup disk, then press and hold Shift and click Continue in Safe Mode.
Mac with an Intel processor: turn on or restart, and immediately hold Shift until the login window appears.

If Mail opens in safe mode, restart normally and remove recently added Mail plug-ins, VPNs or security apps one at a time. If it still won't open in safe mode, the problem is Mail's own data; go to step 5.

5. Let Mail rebuild its message index

Mail keeps an index of all your messages in a file called Envelope Index. If that file is damaged, Mail can fail to open. Apple doesn't document this fix, but it's widely used: move the index out of the way and Mail builds a new one.

Quit Mail (force quit if needed).
In Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder and enter ~/Library/Mail/V10/MailData. (V10 is still the folder on macOS 27.)
Move every file whose name starts with Envelope Index to your Desktop. Don't delete them yet.
Open Mail. It shows an import or rebuilding message and re-indexes your mail, which can take a long time for big mailboxes.
Once Mail works and your mail looks right, you can delete the old files from the Desktop.

For IMAP, iCloud, Gmail and Exchange accounts your messages are on the server, so nothing is lost. If you use POP, back up the whole ~/Library/Mail folder first (Time Machine is fine).

6. Remove an account and add it back

If Mail opens only briefly before hanging, one account may be the trigger. Open System Settings > Internet Accounts (you don't need Mail open), turn Mail off for one account at a time, and try opening Mail after each. When you find the account, remove it and add it back with your provider's option.

If Mail freezes or stops responding

A spinning wheel usually means Mail is stuck waiting on a server or busy with a damaged mailbox. Work through these:

Give it a minute. Right after you add an account or update macOS, Mail may be downloading and indexing thousands of messages. Window > Activity shows what it's doing.
Force quit and reopen with Option-Command-Esc.
Turn off your VPN or network filter and see whether Mail recovers. Apple names these as a common cause of connection problems.
Take the slow account offline. Choose Mailbox > Online Status and take an account offline, or turn off Enable this account in Mail > Settings > Accounts > Account Information. If Mail stops freezing, that account is the problem.
Rebuild the mailbox that hangs. If Mail freezes when you open a particular mailbox, select it and choose Mailbox > Rebuild. For IMAP and Exchange, Mail downloads its contents again from the server.
Check the account's storage. Control-click the mailbox and choose Get Account Info. A mailbox at its limit can cause odd behavior.
Remove and re-add the account as a last step.
